| Binding: | Netherlands, 16th-century blind-tooled calf over wooden boards (see Oldham, 'English blind-stamped bindings', plate V and p. 10); covers decorated with intersecting triple fillets to form a centre panel surrounded by two frames; the centre panel is divided diagonally by fillets into lozenge and triangular-shaped compartments, each filled with a lozenge-shaped fleuron stamp; the inner frame is decorated with crocketed cresting stamps with a rosette at each corner; the outer frame is undecorated; two chased brass clasps (repaired), catch plates on front board; edges of corners protected with brass strips; faint evidence of a manuscript fore-edge title running from head to tail; volume restored and rebacked in Glasgow University Library c.2000 and given new pastedowns and flyleaves (the original parchment pastedowns bound in); original paper flyleaves now bound up separately (see Annotations); sample of original spine covering decorated with blind fillets mounted on new rear pastedown. | Annotations: | Occasional marginal annotations in a 16th-century hand; six full pages of manuscript notes by Jameson (originally bound in as flyleaves but now bound separately in marbled boards) are headed “Cophonis tractatus admodum vtilis qui non antea Impressus omne[m] medendi modu[m] no[n] minus vere q[uam] dece[n]ter co[m]plectens Incipit” and contain extracts from the writings of the 12th-century Salernitan physician, Sopho; on the rear vellum pastedown are nine lines of medical text in a 15th/16th-century hand containing remedies for “morbus hispanicus” i.e. syphilis. |
