Provenance: | Edmund Hopkines (fl. 1568), of Foulsham, Norfolk: inscription on 1/2r (f. 2r) ‘Liber Edmundi Hopkines de Folsham in com[i]t[ate] norff. generoso’ followed by his mark and the year 1568; inscription on 8/6v (f. 74v) ‘Iste liber p[er]tinet bear yt well in mind || ad me Edmundu[m] Hopkines so curteous & so kinde || Si ego perdam and you it finde || quaeso te to take a litell peyne || videre libru[m] to restore yt home ageine’. Anthony Cockette/Cocket (16th/17th century): names on 3/3v (f. 23v) ‘Anthonius Cockette’ and ‘Anthony Cocket’. Thomas Martin (1697-1771), of Palgrave, antiquary: signature “Tho. Binding: | Low Countries? (tentative attribution by J.B. Oldham, ‘Notes on bindings in the Hunterian and general libraries in Glasgow University’ (1938), p. 9), 15th/16th-century blind-tooled calf over bevelled oak boards. Covers decorated with fillets to form a centre panel bordered by two frames; the panel is divided by intersecting fillets into lozenge and triangular-shaped compartments, and the panel and frames are further decorated with two separate stamps – a round stamp of a paschal lamb and a square stamp of a double-headed eagle; evidence of two fore-edge clasps (both now almost entirely lost); one brass catch plate intact on front board; original spine covering lost; 18th-century pale blue paper pastedowns and endpapers; indistinct title written in ink on top edge of text block. Restored and rebacked by Cockerell & Son, Nov. 1971, with binder’s note tipped onto rear pastedown; thin parchment manuscript guard preserved and lightly attached to rear pastedown.
