| Provenance: | Unidentified German bookseller (early 19th century): extract from German bookseller’s catalogue tipped-onto front pastedown: item 157 “Glossa psalterii Dauid magistri Petri Lombardi ... Das erste Blatt ist etwas beschädigt; auch sind zwei gemalte Anfangsbuchstaben herausgeschnitten” (price not included). H. Bedford (fl. 1846): pencil annotation on front free endpaper “H. Bedford 1846”. John Petheram (1807-1858), antiquary, publisher and bookseller in London: sold book to William Euing. William Euing (1788-1874), insurance broker, Glasgow: bought from Petheram 20 Oct. 185[-] according to Euing’s pencil acquisition note with price code “20.10 5 bb/ Peth” on front pastedown together with an early Euing inventory number in pencil “57”. University of Glasgow: presented by Euing in 1872 according to University Library bookplate on front pastedown. |
| Binding: | Germany, 17th-century(?) blind-tooled calf over pasteboards, of which only remnants of original spine remain; front and rear boards re-covered in dark brown blind-tooled paper in the 19th century; blue marbled-edges; front and rear free endpapers have watermark of a chained unicorn salient. | Decoration: | On 9/4v (f. 80v) a six-line initial ‘B’ is supplied in various shades of grey to represent foliage and given a deep red infill embellished with dull gold tracery; similarly decorated principal initials (but in different colours) supplied on 17/9r (f. 159r), 25/5r (f. 225r), 26/1v (f. 229v), 28/6v (f. 254v); remains of marginal decoration visible on 1/2r; other initials throughout supplied in alternate red and blue (some with reserved white and with marginal flourishes); paragraph marks, underlining, capital strokes and line-fillers supplied mainly in red throughout (paragraph marks and line-fillers very occasionally in blue).
