The De re militari attributed to Modestus consists of excerpts from Vegetius, De re militari - see Lorenzo Dalmasso ‘La storia di un estratto di Vegezio saggio sulla fortuna dell’ Epitoma rei militaris’ in Rendiconti Istituto Lombardo di scienze e lettere ser. 2, 40 (1907), pp. 805-814.

Provenance:	Thomas Jekyll (d. 1774?), nephew of Sir Joseph Jekyll, Master of the Rolls:  lot 2473 in A catalogue of the library of Thomas Jekyl, Esq; deceased; nephew of the Right Honourable Sir Joseph Jekyl ... which will be sold by auction, by S. Baker and G. Leigh ... beginning Monday, March the 20th, 1775. William Hunter (1718-1783), physician and anatomist:  purchased by Hunter at the Jekyll sale for £3.15.0 according to the annotated British Library copy of the Jekyll sale catalogue - shelfmark S.C.S. 12(4). University of Glasgow:  Hunterian bequest 1807;  Hunterian Museum bookplate on front pastedown, with former shelfmark “Aw.11.14”.
Binding:	18th-century mottled calf;  covers decorated with a triple gold-fillet border, a small gold ornament at each corner;  marbled endpapers;  green silk bookmark.   Size:  183 x 138 mm.

Annotations:	On 1/1r “Summae Raritatis” in an 18th-century hand followed by references to editions printed at Paris, 1522 and Lugdunum Batavorum, 1581.

Annotations:	Occasional marginal annotations and underlining in a humanist hand in brown ink, mainly extracting keywords or phrases;  corrections of text on 3/4v and 3/5r (ff. 18v and 19r);  traces of early manuscript signatures;  on verso of front free endpaper is a 20th-century price “2-2-0” faintly visible in pencil together with a shelfmark “15.F.28” in pencil;  number “400” in pencil on rear free endpaper.
Decoration:	Principal initials supplied in gold, embellished with white vine decoration defined in reddish-pink and green and placed on a blue square ground decorated with a pattern of white dots in groups of three;  two and three-line initials supplied in alternate blue and red.
