William Euing (1788-1874), insurance broker, Glasgow: source unknown; purchased 28 Sept. 1854 according to Euing’s acquisition note giving date and price code in pencil “28 9 54 bg/” on front pastedown, together with an early Euing inventory number “No 77”. | Binding: | Germany, 16th-century blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards. The front cover is decorated with intersecting fillets to form a centre panel bordered by three frames; the panel is divided by fillets into lozenge and triangular-shaped compartments which are decorated with separate stamps of an acorn on a branch of oak leaves and a lozenge-shaped floral stamp; the first frame is decorated with the same floral stamp, a lozenge-shaped stamp of an eagle, and a worn octagonal stamp of a griffin(?); the octagonal stamp is occasionally used in the second frame; the outer frame is undecorated. The rear cover is decorated with intersecting fillets to form a centre panel bordered by two frames; the panel is divided by fillets from corner to corner to form four triangles, each containing a separate stamp of an acorn on a branch of oak leaves; the first frame is decorated with the acorn stamp and the octagonal stamp of a griffin(?); the outer frame is undecorated. Spine undecorated; 19th-century black leather title label added to spine; evidence from circular impressions and nail holes of corner and centre bosses on each cover – all now lost; evidence of two clasps – both lost; evidence of numerous tabs – all removed; 19th-century endpapers (originals not preserved). | Decoration: | The woodcut on π8v of the patron saints Henricus and Cunegundis (i.e. the Holy Roman Emperor Henry II and his wife, Cunegunde of Luxembourg) holding in their hands Bamberg cathedral is coloured by hand; woodcut initial “T” on 3χ6r representing the sacrifice of Isaac is coloured by hand; a hand-coloured roundel depicting the Paschal Lamb is supplied in the lower margin of 3χ10v. |
