Provenance:	Edward Harley (1689-1741), Lord Harley;  from 1724 2nd Earl of Oxford:  see Binding. Thomas Osborne (d. 1767), bookseller:  purchased all the Harleian printed books;  top corner of first front flyleaf cut off - as in many other Harleian volumes - probably by Osborne to remove his earlier price (cf. J.B. Oldham, Shrewsbury School bindings, p.114);  revised price in pencil “2-2-0” adjacent to excision;  top corner of second front flyleaf similarly cut off but without the addition of a price;  no. 1886 in Osborne’s Catalogus bibliothecae Harleianae, vol. 3 (London:  1744) and no. 2965 (with erroneous imprint “Coloniae”) in his Catalogus bibliothecae Harleianae, vol. 5 (London:  1745). Binding:	England, 18th-century gold-tooled red goatskin;  bound for Lord Harley by Christopher Chapman.   On both covers triple fillets form a single frame:  within the frame is a floral roll (Nixon, ‘Harleian bindings’, pl. 13), and an ornamental roll (Nixon, ‘Harleian bindings’, pl. 14, Chapman roll 1);  both covers have a lozenge-shaped  centre-piece, made up of several individual tools (including Nixon, ‘Harleian bindings’, pl. 15, Chapman nos 5, 14a, and 14b).   The head of the spine (the foot of the spine is missing) is decorated with Chapman roll 2 (Nixon, ‘Harleian bindings’, pl. 14), and the spine compartments are decorated with Nixon, ‘Harleian bindings’, pl. 15, Chapman nos 9 and 10;  the turn-ins are decorated with Chapman roll 2;  marbled endpapers;  early title written in ink on lower edge of text block “Liber de Homine 1474”.   Size:  313 x 218 mm.

Annotations:	Occasional marginal annotations in Italian in a 17th-century(?) hand (mainly extracting keywords);  evidence of early manuscript signatures;  foliated “1”-“99” in an early hand from 3/1-15/5 (ff. 13-109) i.e. the foliation includes the two duplicated leaves in quire 4;  on third front flyleaf the number “108” in ink in an 18th-century hand together with bibliographical references to Maittaire’s Annales typographici and a note in Italian on the duplicate bifolium in quire 4.
Decoration:	Eleven-line initial “P” on 3/1r (f. 13r) supplied in blue with reserved white, the body of the initial filled with red pen-work decoration which also frames the initial;  numerous smaller initials supplied in either red with purple pen-work decoration or blue with red pen-work decoration;  paragraph marks throughout supplied in alternate red and blue.
Imperfections:	Wanting the blank leaf 15/8.
