William Hunter (1718-1783), physician and anatomist:  purchased by Hunter at the Gaignat sale through his agent, Jean-Baptiste Dessain, for 9 livres;  see Dessain-Hunter correspondence (University of Glasgow Library, MS Gen. 36, f. 25r) -  though this price is perhaps an error since in a priced copy of the Gaignat sale catalogue in University of Glasgow Library (shelfmark BD17-g.22, 23) the price is given as 48 livres 13 sous.

Binding: France, 18th-century red goatskin;  covers decorated with a triple gold-fillet border, a small gold fleuron at each corner;  gold-tooled spine;  marbled endpapers;  gilt-edged leaves.   Size:  399 x 293 mm.
Leaf size: 389 x 279 mm.
Annotations: Very occasional marginal annotations, manicules and chapter headings in early hands;  1/2-13/6 (ff. 2-106) foliated in ink in an early hand “1”-“105”.
Decoration: Ten-line initial “I” on 1/2r supplied in red and brown pen-work;  other initials supplied in red, or in red with reserved white, most with guide letters in brown ink still visible and many with pen-flourishing;  initial on 2/7r (f. 17r) supplied in red and yellow;  paragraph marks supplied in red throughout;  line-filler in green on 1/6r.
