Binding: | Italy, 15th/16th-century; an ‘alla greca’ binding (cf. G.D. Hobson, Thirty bindings (London: 1926) plate II); blind-tooled red goatskin over wooden boards with grooved edges, cut flush with the text-block - the fore-edge protruding slightly; sewing is on four recessed bands giving a smooth, rounded back (endbands are raised); three brass pegs (two at the fore-edge, one at the foot) remain on the edges of the front board and there is evidence of a now missing peg at the top edge; one double-braided leather strap inserted at the foot of the rear board is all that remains of the fastenings; covers decorated in blind with fillets, a roll, and two separate stamps to form a design of five concentric rectangles (the third and the outer rectangle mitred but undecorated); spine decoration of lozenges formed by intersecting blind fillets, a spine title added at a later date; endleaves have a crown imperial watermark (cf. Briquet, 4890-4902); red-edged leaves. Size: 295 x 205 mm. |
