Provenance: | Sir William Stirling Maxwell (1818-1878), 9th baronet, art historian and collector: engraved armorial bookplate printed in red on front pastedown with name “William Stirling Maxwell” and three mottoes “Gang forward”, “Poco a poco” and ”I am ready”; his engraved booklabel “Emblems Keir” printed in red on rear pastedown; monogram of Sir William Stirling Maxwell added in blind to centre of front cover and a different version added to rear cover; Stirling Maxwell’s shelfmark “23F” in pencil on rear pastedown; two other Stirling Maxwell shelfmarks in pencil on verso of front free endpaper “K.3” and “50.3” (the latter lightly deleted).
