Binding: | Germany, 16th-century blind-tooled calf over wooden boards. The front cover is decorated with fillets to form a centre panel surrounded by three frames; the panel is decorated with a repeated vine-like tool with tendrils (Rautengerank) to form characteristic pointed oval shapes, each filled with a separate foliate tool; the inner frame is decorated with a separate circular stamp of a five-petalled flower; the two outer frames are formed from a floral roll and a fleur-de-lys roll, and at the top of the cover is the author’s name and abbreviated title stamped in blind. The rear cover has a centre panel decorated vertically with three columns formed from a strap-work roll, and the panel is bordered with the same floral and fleur-de-lys rolls as appear on the front cover. Four chased brass corner-pieces and a chased brass centre-piece on each board (one corner-piece now lost in the inner lower corner of the rear board); remnants of clasps, with brass catch plates on front board; rebacked in 19th/20th century and given new pastedowns and endpapers (no evidence survives of original spine covering, pastedowns or endpapers).
