Binding: | Germany, 15th/16th-century blind-tooled calf over bevelled wooden boards; covers decorated with intersecting double fillets to form a centre panel bordered by two frames; the panel is divided by a double fillet into lozenge and triangular-shaped compartments, which are decorated with a circular stamp of a long-necked bird (a swan?), two different circular stamps containing an eagle, and a small circular stamp containing a six-pointed star; the inner frame is decorated with a circular stamp of a six-petalled flower within a shield and an oblong ‘ihesus’ stamp; the outer frame (on the front cover only) has a single rectagular stamp of a lion(?) at its lower edge; the spine is undecorated; evidence of two clasps with catch plates on rear board, both now lost; numerous pink-stained tabs in the Exempla (quires i-s); binding repaired in the 19th century and given new endpapers (originals unrecorded), and a red leather title label added to spine. Decoration: | On D1r an eighteen-line initial “E” with foliate decoration in shades of mauve and white is set on a rectangular ground decorated with a foliate pattern in shades of green and black; other initials throughout supplied in red or in red with reserved white, some with marginal flourishes; paragraph marks and capital strokes supplied throughout in red; a crown in red ink is set above the printer’s device on v7v and the two shields of the device are outlined in red. |
