William Euing (1788-1874), insurance broker, Glasgow: purchased from Stark 20 Jan. 1855 according to Euing’s pencil acquisition note with price code “20-1-55 dg/- Stark” on front pastedown; an early Euing inventory number “143” in pencil on front pastedown. University of Glasgow: presented by Euing in 1872 according to one of two University Library bookplates on front pastedown. |
Binding: | Germany, 16th-century blind-tooled pigskin over bevelled wooden boards; covers decorated with intersecting triple fillets to form a centre panel and surrounding frame; the centre panel is divided by triple fillets into lozenge and triangular-shaped compartments, each decorated with separate rosette stamps; spine undecorated (but with a title label added in the 19th/20th century); remains of two clasps; brass catch plates on front board; endpapers and flyleaves (not contemporary) have a tête de boeuf watermark surmounted by a five-petalled flower on a stem.
