Georg Biderman (fl. 1589), of Sigmaringen (Baden-Württemberg): inscriptions on a1r “Annumeror libris Georgij Bid[er]manij Sigmaringarij Anno virginej partus 1589 S:M:C:” and “Georg: Biderman Sigmaringarius An[n]o Salutis nostrae 1590”, accompanied by mottoes or Latin quotations in Biderman’s hand “Vide cui fidas ...” and “Qui vult coronarj, debet pugnare quia Nemo coronabitur nisi legitime certaverit”. Joannes Sickel(?), (17th century?): inscription on front pastedown “Ex libris Joan. Sickl(?)”. | Binding: | South Germany, 16th-century blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards (see J.B. Oldham, Notes on bindings in the Hunterian and general libraries in Glasgow University, p. 6bis); both covers decorated with intersecting fillets to form a centre panel bordered by two frames; the panel is decorated with a repeated vine-like tool with tendrils (Rautengerank) to form characteristic pointed oval shapes, each filled with a lozenge-shaped stamp depicting an eagle; the inner frame is decorated with a pear-shaped stamp depicting a reclining stag and a square-shaped rosette stamp; the outer frame is undecorated; spine undecorated (spine title added in gilt in 19th century); remains of two brass clasps, catch plates on front board; parchment spine-strengtheners visible with text in German; frequent parchment index tabs; fore-edge title in ink ‘Biblia’; paper pastedowns - the rear pastedown, which contains 43 manuscript lines of theological text in German (17th/18th century?), is partially obscured by two parchment strips which have been added to cover fissures in the wooden boards; two flyleaves added in the 19th century, one at front the other at rear.
