| Binding: | England, 18th-century calf; covers decorated with a double gold-fillet border and a centre panel formed by gold fillets and a blind roll, with a floral ornament in gilt at its centre and a floral ornament in gilt at each outer corner; rebacked in 19th/20th century and given new endpapers; an original parchment pastedown bound in at end; 15th/16th-century manuscript title “biblia” on lower edge of text block. | Annotations: | Occasional marginal annotations in a 16th-century hand; two inscriptions in a 16th-century hand on a1r “Trybulation and aduersitye are the fire and salt that purge and preserue vs from stynckinge and do not destroye vs, but they teache vs to put our trust in god, and not in ourselves ...” and “Where fayth ys ther is amendment of lyfe, for fayth ys the roote out of which good lyfe doth springe”, together with a quotation in a later hand from Matthew 5:29 “If thy right eye offend thee ...”; inscriptions in a 16th-century hand on dd8v “Coniugis iratae noli tu verba timere nam lacrymis struit insidias du[m] foemina plorat” (Cato, Disticha, 3:20), “Uxores lacrimas habent in promptu”, “Du[m] foemina plorat, animus cu[m] fraude laborat” and “Domus mea, domus orationis vocabitur” (Matthew 21:13); on the parchment pastedown bound in at the rear is a 16th-century annotation relating to “Kyng Dauid”; the number “570/16”, written in pencil on the parchment pastedown, is probably a binder’s job number. |
