Binding: | Germany, 19th-century half mottled calf, marbled paper-covered boards; paper title label with manuscript title on spine; sprinkled red-edged leaves; inserted at the front of the volume is a ruled parchment leaf, whose recto and verso are divided into six columns containing manuscript tables of Gospel readings throughout the liturgical year written in a 16th-century hand, the text on the verso being continued onto the blank page 1/1r which is similarly ruled and divided into columns, and the text is then continued onto both sides of a ruled parchment leaf inserted at the rear of the volume. Annotations: | On front free endpaper is a 19th-century pencil reference in German to the printed foliation and to the three illuminated initials; traces of an erased pencil inscription including Hain number 3069* and possibly including the word “Presented” on front free endpaper; other erased pencil annotations on front free endpaper; very faint date in pencil on rear free endpaper “2 7 97” and also faintly written in pencil the numbers “468” and “18” (the latter lightly scored through); 20th-century price “£50.0.0” (before 1953) in pencil on front flyleaf; mid 20th-century duplicated typescript description of this copy (perhaps intended as caption for an exhibition?) tipped onto rear free endpaper. |
Decoration: | On 1/2r, col. 1, a fourteen-line initial “F” in shades of blue to represent foliage is set on a square ground of patterned gold within a frame composed of eight red and green segments; on the same page are elaborate floral and foliate borders in red, green, light and dark blue, pink, dull yellow and gold. On 1/5r (i.e. iiij) a five-line initial “I” in various shades of crimson to represent foliage is set on a square ground of patterned gold within a green and yellow frame, from which there extends a floral and foliate border into the inner and upper margins. At the beginning of Proverbs on 25/1r (f. 235r i.e. ccxxxiiij), col. 1, a seven-line initial “I” in shades of blue to represent foliage is set on a square ground of patterned gold within a frame composed of eight red and green segments, and in col. 2 an eight-line initial “P” decorated in green and black to represent foliage is set on a similar square gold ground within a frame of eight red and blue segments; in the centre margin of the same page - dividing the two columns of text - is a green stem from which floral and foliate decoration extends into the outer margins. Other initials throughout are supplied in red or washed-out blue; many chapter numbers underlined in red. |
