| Binding: | Germany, 16th-century quarter blind-tooled pigskin over partially bevelled wooden boards; leather on front cover decorated with a broad fillet to form lozenge shapes and triangles and further decorated with three separate stamps - a roundel containing an eagle with halo (symbol of St John the Evangelist), a rectangular foliate stamp, and a pear-shaped stamp containing a crouching long-necked bird (a stork or swan?); leather of rear cover decorated with a broad fillet to form triangles and with two separate stamps - an unidentified scroll and the same pear-shaped stamp as on the front board; evidence of a single clasp (now lost); traces of red-edging; traces of manuscript title on fore-edge; indistinct coat of arms in pen and ink on top edge of text block; front pastedown is a vellum bifolium containing an unidentified manuscript text with frequent references to Vergil, 'Georgics', Book 3; rear pastedown is a vellum leaf from a liturgical manuscript containing musical notation in staveless neumes with text beginning “Adiutor in oportunitatibus in tribulatione” (Psalms 9:10); an inscription in Greek in a 16th-century hand using non-standard orthography “Ανδρον κιλιαδας εν ερεμο πενθεχορεσι” (ex inf. David Weston) has been added to the rear pastedown with the words “εδιλισ” “ιδωλον” and “idolum” written above it in the same hand, together with pen-trials of several Greek abbreviations and symbols; label with number “2664” in ink attached to inner front board.
