| Provenance: | Unidentified owner: on 1/2r is an unidentified coat of arms mainly painted in now oxidized silver: a chevron between three castles double-towered, with foliage in red and oxidized silver extending from both sides of the shield; at the top of the shield is the figure of a long-haired, bearded man whose fore-fingers are placed at the corners of his open mouth, and who is dressed in a garment painted in now oxidized silver, pulled in at the waist and with loose half-length sleeves, which reveal a red tunic buttoned at the wrists. Edward Harley (1689-1741), Lord Harley; from 1724 2nd Earl of Oxford: see below. Thomas Osborne (d. 1767), bookseller: purchased all the Harleian printed books; top corner of first front flyleaf cut off - as in many other Harleian volumes - probably by Osborne to remove his earlier price (cf. J.B. Oldham, Shrewsbury School bindings, p.114); revised price in pencil “4v- 15.15.0” adjacent to excision; no. 3149 (which includes three other 15th-century editions of Bartolus de Saxoferrato) in Osborne’s Catalogus bibliothecae Harleianae, vol. 3 (London: 1744); the three accompanying editions of Bartolus de Saxoferrato, uniformly bound in 18th-century diced russia, are also in the Hunterian Library (see shelfmarks Bv.1.2 (B18), Bv.1.3 (B19), Bv.1.4 (B20)). | Binding: | England, 18th-century gold-tooled diced russia, bound for Lord Harley by Christopher Chapman. On both covers double fillets form a frame, within which is a border made up of three separate tools including Nixon, ‘Harleian bindings’, pl. 15, Chapman no. 11. The head and foot of the spine are decorated with Nixon, ‘Harleian bindings’, pl. 14, Chapman roll 2, and the spine compartments are decorated with several individual tools, one of which is a slightly larger version of Nixon, ‘Harleian bindings’, pl. 15, Chapman no. 17. The edges are decorated with Chapman roll 2, and the turn-ins are undecorated; marbled endpapers. Size: 443 x 295 mm. |
