Also loosely inserted (presumably as a bookmark) is the torn-off lower part of what appears to be the final page from an 18th-century English bookseller’s priced catalogue. |

Binding: | 16th-century blind-tooled calf over bevelled wooden boards; covers decorated with a blind roll within intersecting fillets to form a frame and a central panel; the roll incorporates a portcullis, crown, lion, griffin, and branches of acorns; the panel is divided by a fillet into lozenge and triangular-shaped compartments, each filled with a separate stamp of fringed foliage; remains of two clasps (catch plates on rear board); surviving portions of spine covering decorated with two gold-tooled lozenge-shaped floral ornaments; parchment manuscript strips with French text used to strengthen joints.
