Thomas Osborne (d.1767), bookseller: top corner of first front flyleaf (which is now mounted onto front free endpaper) is cut off - as in many other Harleian volumes - probably by Osborne to remove his earlier price; a revised price in pencil ‘1-1-0’ is visible adjacent to the excision; see 'Catalogus bibliothecae Harleianae', I (1743), no. 5098 (‘Tegm. Maurit. deaurat.’), III (1744), no. 945 (‘Cor. Turc. deaurat.’), V (1745), no. 754 (‘corio turcico deaur.’); one of the Osborne copies is lot 95 (‘gilt-panelled russia’ by Thomas Elliott, with Harleian pressmark) in the Doheny sale, Christie’s, N.Y., 22 Oct. 1987. Robert Hoblyn, (1710-1756), politician: 'Bibliotheca Hoblyniana: sive, catalogus librorum, juxta exemplar, quod manu suâ maximâ ex parte descriptum reliquit Robertus Hoblyn ...' (Londini:, J. Murray, 1769), p.214; lot 4398 in the auction sale 'Bibliotheca Hoblyniana ...' (London: Baker & Leigh, 1778); Hoblyn’s shelfmark "W7-17" on mounted first front flyleaf. William Hunter (1718-1783), physician and anatomist: purchased at the Hoblyn sale for £2.16.0 according to the annotated BL copy of the Hoblyn sale catalogue - shelfmark S.C.S. 11(4). University of Glasgow: Hunterian bequest 1807; Hunterian Museum bookplate on rear pastedown, with former shelfmark “Au.4.15”. |
