Gender Equality Group
Background
As part of the 2012 Athena SWAN application process the University was required to put together a Self Assessment Team. The function of the team at that time was to oversee the process, ensuring the information gathered was relevant and accurate.
The Self Assessment Team looked at the application form provided by Athena SWAN. They then considered the specific data required for the application and analysed the impact on men and women in STEMM and Non-STEMM areas. The data gathered highlighted areas where the University should focus attention and thus informed the University's Athena SWAN Action Plan.
Following the submission made in November 2012, the University gained its Bronze award. The team then supported and facilitated the implementation of University’s current Athena SWAN Bronze Award Action Plan.
In January 2014, as a result of the change in focus for the Athena SWAN work the team was expanded and new Terms of Reference were agreed. The group is now named the Gender Equality Group.
In May 2015 the Athena SWAN Charter expanded and its principles now extend to:
- Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Business, and Law (AHSSBL) disciplines;
- non-academic staff;
- work to support Transgender people; and
- the impact of intersectionality on experiences of working and studying in higher education.
