Mental Health Awareness Week 2021
Hosted by the Mental Health Foundation, Mental Health Awareness Week this year takes place on 10-16 May, and the theme is nature.
Mental Health Awareness Week is an annual event offering an opportunity for the whole of the UK to focus on achieving good mental health. The Mental Health Foundation started the event 21 years ago, and the event has grown to become one of the biggest awareness weeks across the UK and globally.
Mental Health Awareness Week is open to everyone, and is all about starting conversations about mental health and the things in our daily lives that can affect it.
Being out in nature brings a wealth of benefits for our wellbeing, and the theme was chosen because being in nature is known to be an effective way of tackling mental health problems and of protecting our wellbeing. This seemed particularly important this year - in the year of a pandemic. The Foundation’s own research has shown that being in nature has been one of the most popular ways the public have tried to sustain good mental health at a challenging time. Nature is something that is all around us. It can be really helpful in supporting good mental health.
But the Week is not just about nature – it offers us all an opportunity to engage in conversations about mental health, and to build our own self-knowledge and self-management toolkit to look after and support our own wellbeing effectively.
This year the University of Glasgow will offer a range of wellbeing and mental health focussed activities across the University throughout the week, including nature walks, movement and sport activities hosted by the UofG Active Lifestyles Team, alongside informative podcasts and bitesize webinars on topics including managing exam stress, motivation and sleep.
