What is a National Insurance number?
As a start, employers will expect you to have a National Insurance (NI) number when you apply for work. This ID is a series of numbers and letters. NI numbers are issued free to UK citizens at the age of 16. As soon as you start to work in the UK, National Insurance contributions build up entitlement to certain state benefits. All workers, including students, are required to have an NI number. How much you pay is calculated on your weekly earnings and is deducted automatically by your employer as a form of tax.
