Part-Time Work CV
Below is a 2-step guide on how to write your part-time CV in response to a particular job advert. The CV template at the top of this page is in response to the sample job advert below, so you can see how it has been structured in relation to that.
Step 1: Read the job advert
Read the advert thoroughly and highlight all the skills, competencies, strengths and experience words. You will be using these in your CV and cover letter.
About the role
B&Q: Customer Advisor on the Seasonal / Outdoors Department
Full Time - 30 hours per week
or
Part time - 15 hours per week
3 Month fixed term contract
Shifts available Monday - Sunday, 7.00am - 10.00pm
We believe anyone can improve their home to make life better. Every day, we give our millions of customers the ideas, advice, tools and confidence they need to create a home they’ll love. Join us as a Customer Advisor and you’ll be a big part of this.
Key responsibilities
Join our team, and you’ll do so much more than stack shelves. You’ll become an expert. A trusted advisor. An inspiration as well as a guide. The person who gets to know all kinds of customers and understand their home improvement projects, before opening their eyes to what’s really possible. Sales will be important, of course, as will things like managing stock, setting up displays, and making sure your store looks great. But truly great customer service will be your main aim.
Required skills & experience
Happy to help, eager to learn and just a little bit obsessed with home improvement, you’ll feel right at home with us. You’re friendly and outgoing, and you get a buzz from helping others. You’ll be happy to expand your skills by using new technology and learning new ways of working. You’re great at working in a team too, and flexible enough to work on a rota that includes weekends, evenings and bank holidays.
What's in it for me?
As well as a competitive salary, our benefits package includes an award-winning pension scheme, ShareSave options, 6.6 weeks holiday, payroll giving, an Employee Assistance Programme, shopping discounts, colleague wellbeing benefits and lots more! We also provide generous breaks to make sure you’re refreshed and able to perform at your best. So dependent on the duration of your shift and eligible break entitlement, we will pay you for the time you are on your break, so put your feet up on us!
As part of a great team, you’ll be supported to grow and encouraged to explore new career directions within the business and the wider group. And, because you’ll be inspiring great things for our customers and the whole business, you’ll do work worth caring about.
Step 2: Compile your CV and cover letter
Start to compile your CV and cover letter using the guidance on the above and fastclass, when you are describing what you learned from your experiences – be sure to use the skills words you have highlighted. You can categorise the skills the employer is giving the most value to by counting how many times they have used it, reflect their prioritisation, for example:
- Customer/customer service/customer advisor/advice/happy to help/helping others: 9
- Team: 3
- Expert/guide: 2
- Home improvement: 2
- Setting up displays/making store look great: 2
- Eager to learn/learning new ways of working: 2
- Friendly/outgoing: 2
- Sales: 1
- Managing stock: 1
- Confidence: 1
- Inspiration: 1
- New technology: 1
- Flexible: 1
- Ideas: 1
The fact they have mentioned customer service and helping others 9 times tells us this is a massive priority and should be addressed as such on your CV and cover letter (if they have requested one – often for a part-time job they only require your CV).

Tips for this kind of CV:
- You should aim to keep a part-time CV to one page, use margin to margin, top to bottom
- Keep contact details to your mobile and email. You could put your LinkedIn profile link if you have one and choose to
- 'Top Skills' section - here you are reflecting what they have listed as their top skills in the section of the advert: Required Skills & Experience. You are talking their language and telling them exactly what they want to know. You don’t just list – you also give a piece of real-life evidence
- In the 'Education' Section - you can get a list of transferable skills from Prospects
- The biggest sections are 'Experience' and 'Top Skills' as this is what the employer wants to know about. Do you have the capability to do the job? These sections should change with every application to reflect the skills you have highlighted and the job you are applying for
- The 'Obsessed with Home Improvments' section is very specific and obviously wouldn't go on every CV! If they are asking for something you don’t yet have, try to get some knowledge in it by following their socials or doing a short free course on LinkedIn Learning (sign in with your GUID)
- Usually for a part-time job you will only be asked to submit a CV, use the opening paragraph to produce a super condensed 'Jobsearch Goals' statement. If asked for CV and Cover Letter, don't include this section and elaborate more fully on the Cover Letter
- Download your CV as a PDF. Do not use docx, png, or jpg since an applicant tracking system may not be able to properly display the file or scan the text. For the same reason (applicant tracking system checks) avoid using columns or overly designed CV templates. This template has used columns and a strong design to show an alternative and can be best used when you're handing a CV in personally or you know, for sure, it's not going through an applicant tracking system. Use of applicant tracking systems would be unusual for part-time work
