Philosophy
A number of our collections contain material relating to philosophy:
- Bannerman Papers: over 240 documents relating to the economist and philosopher Adam Smith (1723-1790), author of The Theory of Moral Sentiments
- Bonar: volumes from the library of Adam Smith, many of them of philosophical interest
- Hamilton: 8,000 volumes, dating from 16th century onwards, including works on logic, aesthetics and the history of philosophy
- Alec Lawrence Macfie Papers: includes notes of lectures on Moral Philosophy taken by Macfie (1898-1980) at the University of Glasgow in 1919-20
- Old Library: texts as used at the University for teaching and research up until the end of the 18th century, including some philosophical works; supplemented by 19th century holdings of class libraries (including Ethics Class Library)
- Veitch: over 400 volumes, comprising mostly early printed editions of the medieval scholastic philosophers
