Joint Supervision
A Postgraduate Research (PGR) student may be supervised by a team which includes a second supervisor from an external organisation. Similarly a member of University staff may act as a second supervisor for a student who is registered at another organisation. The relevant Graduate School will deal with these arrangements according to local policies and in accordance with the PGR Code of Practice.
There may be instances where a student spends a significant time (>12months) away from the University and receives supervision from an external supervisor. In these instances it might be appropriate to formalise the relationship with the external organisation and the roles and responsibilities of the supervisory team. There may also be financial implications resulting from the division of the supervisory load for the PGR student. In these cases a legally binding agreement may be appropriate. Please contact the relevant Graduate School for advice in the first instance - where necessary the ACO will also assist.
