Visa refusals
Visa refusals are rare. If you receive a refusal for your Student visa application, we are here to guide you through your next steps.
After a refusal, you may have several options moving forward. If you agree with UKVI’s decision and believe the refusal was justified, you may be able to request a new CAS and submit a new visa application.
However, if you believe UKVI made an error in their decision, you could be eligible to submit an Administrative Review.
Your available options will be detailed in the visa refusal letter emailed to you by UKVI. These options may vary depending on whether you applied from inside or outside the UK, as well as your personal circumstances.
It’s important to act quickly after receiving a refusal to ensure that you can meet UKVI and University deadlines. If you’re in the UK when you receive a refusal, make sure you avoid overstaying your visa.
Before you decide how to proceed after a visa refusal, please follow the steps below, depending on whether you applied from inside or outside of the UK.
If you applied from outside of the UK:
- Upload a copy of the UKVI refusal notice to your applicant self-service area for review.
- Complete and submit the Admission’s enquiry form. After entering your personal details, select the reason for enquiry “CAS/Visa” and then “My visa was refused.”
- Please state if you wish us to issue another CAS. Please note: you must prove that you now meet the specific reason the visa was refused before we will consider for re-issue.
- Once submitted, Admissions will contact you via the email address you provided. They will review your UKVI Visa refusal letter and may request other visa-related documents. They will assess these documents, the arrival deadline for your programme , and your personal situation to determine if a new CAS can be issued.
- Please note that the University must withdraw sponsorship on the CAS used in the refused application, and that CAS cannot be reused.
- Since the Admissions team cannot provide immigration advice, please contact International Student Support for further guidance on your options and next steps.
If you applied from inside of the UK:
- Complete and submit your visa refusal using the UofG helpdesk. You will be required to log in using your student credentials. Once logged in, search the service catalogue for "Contact the Student Services Enquiry Team" and click on the International Student Support category.
- Once submitted the Immigration Compliance team will contact you via your student email address. They will review your uploaded UKVI Visa refusal letter and may request other visa-related documents. They will assess these documents and your personal situation, to determine if a new CAS can be issued.
Please note that the University must withdraw sponsorship on the CAS used in the refused application, and that CAS cannot be reused.
- Since the Immigration Compliance team cannot provide immigration advice, they will direct you to International Student Support for further advice on your options and next steps.
