Updating your visa or passport after changes to your personal details.
You must inform UKVI of changes to your UK address while you are living in the UK (including where you are waiting to receive a visa application decision or BRP).
We discuss below how to update your visa whether you have a BRP or digital visa status, and what the procedure is depending on whether you are inside or outside the UK.
eVisa
You will need to update your details via your UKVI online account where you have changed your:
- Name
- Nationality
- Passport (e.g. recently renewed your passport)
- Address
If you change your name and nationality and receive a new passport or digital visa status, remember to also show these to the Immigration Compliance Team using the Helpdesk form called Visa/Passport Updates.

BRP (inside the UK)
Reporting a name change:
Apply for a new BRP online within 3 months of your name change. You will need to pay a visa application fee to submit the online application form. You will also be required to give your biometric details (a charge for enrolling your biometrics may apply).
You will need to upload a copy of your new visa / BRP to the Immigration Compliance Team once you receive this using the Helpdesk form called Visa/Passport Updates.

Please note: you should not apply for a replacement BRP if you have recently made a UK visa application that you are still waiting to receive a decision for.
Apply for a new BRP card:
- Select option to "Update, replace or transfer your biometric residence permit (BRP)".
- Confirm you have "Changed your name, nationality, facial appearance, date of birth or gender".
- In the "Category of information" section of the form, select the option explaining you are applying to "Update, replace or transfer your BRP".
- Complete the "Your name" section using your new name and tell UKVI your old name in the "Any other names" section.
- Select "Yes" when asked if you have made a change since receiving your BRP in the "Change of personal details section".
- Select the appropriate option for name change and confirm your new name again, along with the details of why your name has changed, in the "Your new personal details" section.
- In the "Documents" section, select the documents you are providing as evidence of your name change. You will scan and upload these for your application.
Reporting a nationality change:
Apply for a new BRP online within 3 months of your nationality change. You will need to pay a visa application fee to submit the online application form. You will also be required to give your biometric details (a charge for enrolling your biometrics applies).
You will need to upload a copy of your new visa / BRP to the Immigration Compliance Team once you receive this using the Helpdesk form called Visa/Passport Updates.

Please note: you should not apply for a replacement BRP if you have recently made a UK visa application that you are still waiting to receive a decision for.
Apply for a new BRP card:
- Select option to "Update, replace or transfer your biometric residence permit (BRP)".
- Confirm you have "Changed your name, nationality, facial appearance, date of birth or gender".
- In the "Category of information" section of the form, select the option explaining you are applying to "Update, replace or transfer your BRP".
- Complete the "Your nationality, date and country of birth" section using your new nationality and any other nationalities you hold. If your new nationality means your previous nationality has been rescinded, only list your new nationality in this section.
- Select "Yes" when asked if you have made a change since receiving your BRP in the "Change of personal details section".
- Select the appropriate option for nationality change and and confirm your new nationality details again, along with the details of why your nationality has changed, in the "Your new personal details" section.
- In the "Documents" section, select the documents you are providing as evidence of your name change. You will scan and upload these for your application.
Reporting a new passport (including passport renewal):
You will need to complete a Change in Circumstances form within 3 months of receiving the new passport. See the guidance on page 3 of the form regarding what to do if you have received a new passport.
Remember to also upload a copy of your new passport to the Immigration Compliance Team by uploading a copy of your new passport ID details page using the Helpdesk form called Visa/Passport Updates.

BRP (outside the UK)
Reporting a name change:
When you change your name you will first need to apply for a new passport in your new name.
To update your BRP with your new name, you will need to complete the online application form for a BRP replacement single entry visa . Once granted, this visa will allow you to enter the UK with your new passport containing your new name. You will pay a visa application fee when submitting the application form online and will also give your biometric details as part of the application process.
Once in the UK, you will then need to apply for a new BRP card in your new name within 3 months of re-entering the UK. See the information on how to apply for a replacement BRP card in the UK following a name change on our webpages here.
Remember to also upload a copy of your new visa once you receive this to the Immigration Compliance Team using the Helpdesk form called Visa/Passport Updates.

Applying for a BRP replacement single entry visa:
- Select option to apply for a "BRP Vignette Transfer".
- Confirm you are applying to "Replace your visa (vignette) because your name or personal details in your existing passport have changed".
- In the "Category of information" section of the form, select that you are applying for a "Replacement biometric residence permit (BRP) visa".
- Complete the "Your name" section using your new name and tell UKVI your old name in the "Any other names" section.
- Select "Yes" when asked if you have made a change since receiving your BRP in the "Change of personal details section".
- Select the appropriate option for name change and and confirm your new name again, along with the details of why your name has changed, in the "Your new personal details" section.
- In the "Information about your application" section there is a free-text box - explain here that you are outside the UK, have changed your name, and you are applying so your BRP will reflect your name change as stated in your new passport.
- In the "Evidence" section, tick both boxes. It is advisable to submit official evidence of your name change with your application. You will scan and upload these documents.
Reporting a nationality change:
If your passport under your previous nationality is rescinded then you will need to complete the online application form for a BRP replacement single entry visa. You will pay a visa application fee when submitting the application form online and will also need to give your biometric details as part of the visa application process.
Once in the UK, you will then need to apply for a new BRP card due to the change to your nationality within 3 months of re-entering the UK. See the information on how to apply for a replacement BRP card in the UK following a nationality change on our webpages here.

Applying for a BRP replacement single entry visa:
- Select option to apply for a "BRP Vignette Transfer".
- Confirm you are applying to "Replace your visa (vignette) because your name or personal details in your existing passport have changed".

- Complete the "Your nationality, country and date of birth" section using your new nationality.
- In the "Your other nationalities" section select "Yes" and confirm whether you have retained your previous nationality or not.
- Complete the "Details of other nationality" section with any additional or previous nationality details.
- Select "Yes" when asked if you have made a change since receiving your BRP in the "Change of personal details section".
- Select the appropriate option for nationality change and and confirm your new nationality details again, along with the details of why your nationality has changed, in the "Your new personal details" section.
- In the "Information about your application" section there is a free-text box - explain here that you are outside the UK, have changed your nationality, and you are applying so your BRP will reflect your nationality change.
- In the "Evidence" section, tick both boxes. It is advisable to submit official evidence of your nationality change with your application. You will scan and upload these documents.
Reporting a new passport (including passport renewal):
You are able to re-enter the UK carrying both your new and old passports and your BRP.
Within 3 months of re-entering the UK, you will need to complete and submit a Change in Circumstances form to report the passport change to UKVI. See the guidance on page 3 of the form regarding what to do if you have received a new passport.
Remember to also upload a copy of your new passport once you receive this to the Immigration Compliance Team using the Helpdesk form called Visa/Passport Updates.

Change of UK address
You must inform UKVI of changes to your UK address while you are living and studying in the UK (including where you are waiting to receive a visa application decision or BRP).
If your current visa was issued as a BRP or on a visa sticker: you would tell UKVI about a change of address using the online form .
If you have a digital visa status: you can change your address on your online visa account.
Remember to also update your address details on My Campus.
