A collaborative project between The Hunterian, Glasgow Life, History at the University of Glasgow and Face Lab at Liverpool John Moores University has created a 3D head of Robert Bruce: Robert I, king of Scots from 1306 until his death in 1329.

This talk will explore some of the decisions made in the process of presenting a digital facial reconstruction of Robert the Bruce, depicting his most likely appearance based on interpretation of a skull cast and historical data. Decisions about hair and eye colour, clothing and armour, and the presentation of mild leprosy were made based upon knowledge of the historical figure. Multiple versions of the facial depiction were produced: 2D images with/without leprosy and armour, and a 3D printed replica with all accoutrements.

This multi-out presentation enables the most likely appearance of Robert the Bruce to be offered. The release of a facial depiction leads to global cultural enrichment, in this case in relation to Scottish medieval history, and a facial depiction has the power to change the way we see this King.

In collaboration with Historic Environment Scotland, and to commemorate the 750th anniversary of the birth of the hero-king, the head is now on display at Dunfermline Abbey until 7 December 2024.

The Friday Focus talk programme features a different speaker each week, sharing a deeper insight into our exhibitions and collections, and work going on behind the scenes at The Hunterian. We hold the talks every Friday at 1pm online over Zoom. Talks are approximately 20 minutes long with time for questions afterwards.
