Jenny MacLeod is a final year AHRC/SGSAH funded doctoral researcher at the University of Glasgow researching Scottish women etchers and their contributions to the Etching Revival and Boom periods, circa 1880-1930.

Despite Scotland’s strong printmaking heritage, women remain a footnote in current scholarship on Scottish printmaking, especially etching. Critics of women etchers in the early 20th century said that etching was an art in which women were destined to excel. However, within existing literature there is a distinct lack of focus on women’s contribution to the art at a time when an increasing number of women were training and practising as artists.

In this Friday Focus talk, Jenny will explore the lives and work of four women etchers – Katherine Cameron (1874-1965), Susan Fletcher Crawford (1863-1918), Josephine Haswell Miller (1890-1975), Eleanor Allen Moore (1885-1955) and Mary Viola Paterson (1899-1981) - that form part of The Hunterian’s distinguished print collection and also consider the challenges when it comes to researching prints by women artists in museum collections.

AHRC/SGSAH is the Arts and Humanities Research Council/Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities.

The Friday Focus talk programme features a different speaker each week, sharing a deeper insight into our exhibitions and collections, and work going on behind the scenes at The Hunterian. We hold the talks every Friday at 1pm online over Zoom. Talks are approximately 20 minutes long with time for questions afterwards.
