Japanese artist Chizuko Nakaji has donated a unique new medal to The Hunterian following the FIDEM XXXII Glasgow 2012 International Art Medal Congress which took place at The Hunterian from 10 - 14 July 2012.‎

Her medal, called “Happy FIDEM”, embodies the happy spirit of friendship and creativity represented by this biennial event which brings together artists from around the world working in a wide variety of media. The 87 year old artist won many new friends in Glasgow with her grace and charm.

The FIDEM XXXII Glasgow 2012 International Art Medal Congress comprised predominantly international delegates, many of whom had not visited Scotland before.‎

The Congress was very successful and received a great deal of positive feedback from the artists and participants. The Hunterian is delighted that the event was held in Glasgow as it afforded us a unique opportunity to promote medallic art more widely in Scotland.

As well as generating a wonderfully positive impression of the city and the University, Glasgow City Marketing Bureau has calculated the economic benefit of the Congress to the city of Glasgow is over £256,000.

The Modern Medals exhibition which accompanied the Congress is still showing in the Hunterian Museum and runs until 19 August.
