Job purpose
The University of Glasgow is seeking to appoint a talented and highly motivated Senior Project Manager for the CRUK Glasgow RadNet Centre to ensure seamless coordination across all activities, maintain strong engagement with partners, and lead efforts to drive the Centre's objectives forward. This individual will play a pivotal role in developing and executing operational strategies, elevating our external profile, and facilitating clear and effective communication with both team members and partners. They will take the lead in collaborating with existing and potential partners to design, negotiate, and implement robust, achievable project plans that align with our strategic objectives.
The CRUK RadNet Centre Glasgow is a multidisciplinary endeavour that will link up and provide world class translational infrastructure for a broad range of clinical and non-clinical researchers, enabling them to generate an internationally leading radiotherapy research pipeline that connects discovery science to clinical trials and back again. The overall aim of the CRUK RadNet Glasgow Centre is to understand the causes of resistance to radiotherapy, identify biomarkers that identify patients at highest risk of recurrence after radical radiotherapy, and maximise the chance of cure by intensifying treatment using novel technological and biological strategies. Building on our unique strengths in preclinical cancer models, the CRUK RadNet Glasgow research programme will focus on cancers of unmet need including glioblastoma, head & neck cancer, lung cancer (including mesothelioma), pancreatic cancer, rectal cancer and primary liver cancer.
The job holder will be responsible for leading the operational delivery of this major research programme. The CRUK RadNet initiative comprises a number of organisations including the Universities of Glasgow, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Cambridge, UCL and the Institute of Cancer Research along with NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde and other Scottish Health Boards, multiple major cancer hospitals and several SMEs and charities. The job holder will be expected to engage successfully with this level of complexity.
The job holder will be accountable for the operational delivery of the project. They will be line managed by the University of Glasgow as part of the College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences' School of Cancer Sciences team but will report, and be accountable to, the CRUK RadNet Glasgow Centre Director. The job holder will also be the key contact for communications with other CRUK RadNet partners and will be expected to build and develop relationships with equivalent staff at sites across the UK.
Main duties & responsibilities
- Take a leading role in coordinating with industry partners, scientists, bioinformaticians, and NHS colleagues to deliver RadNet Centre projects. This includes monitoring progress against financial and timeline targets to ensure the timely delivery of outputs and outcomes while supporting the execution of high-quality research. The job holder should actively oversee project milestones and be an integral member of the team.
- Support Director, Scientific Theme Leads, investigators and colleagues in generating key deliverables. Examples include (but are not limited to) formal report submissions, financial tracking, grant applications, website design, design and implementation of tracking tools, and managing contract and legal discussions both internally and externally.
- Develop and maintain effective communications and working relationships with partners, existing and new, including scheduling and organisation of regular meetings between CRUK RadNet Glasgow collaborators and partners.
- Provide project management advice and expertise to senior managers as needed to support the implementation of strategic projects.
- Deliver effective operational management of the programme, working in conjunction with CRUK RadNet Glasgow staff, finance, legal, principal and co-investigators, academic and NHS colleagues, and industry partners
- Coordinate contracting activities for new projects and manage any changes to existing projects, ensuring all legal and contractual aspects are handled effectively.
- Designing systems appropriate for tracking individual project spend. Maintaining and monitoring financial records for the CRUK RadNet Glasgow projects in terms of spend and commitment. Analysing trends and proposing solutions to keep within agreed boundaries.
- Regularly review project risks and prepare reports for the CRUK RadNet Glasgow Steering Committee and Scientific Advisory Board. Work closely with risk owners to mitigate any risks as they arise.
- Take the lead in engaging with key stakeholders at the CRUK RadNet Centre Glasgow, strengthening collaborative relationships.
- Serve as the clerk for the Steering Committee and Scientific Advisory Board, preparing progress reports on project outcomes, financial commitments, and strategic issues needing action. Present summary positions and other relevant information to the Board upon request.
- Host the Patient and Public Involvement Group, organising twice yearly review meetings and communicate any ad hoc reviewing opportunities or training to the group.
- Manage all external financial and related reporting requirements as agreed.
- Act as the primary point of contact for all internal and external inquiries related to CRUK RadNet Glasgow.
- Manage communication with and liaison across the CRUK RadNet centres.
- Take responsibility for effective communication of CRUK RadNet Glasgow activity and successes, including website, press releases and social media as appropriate.
- Operate within agreed site and laboratory regulations for safe working (COSHH, clinical materials)
- Take a leading role in overseeing research governance and data management, ensuring that projects comply with all research governance obligations, and meet assurance and audit requirements related to the handling of sensitive, confidential data and clinical samples.
- Operates within University regulations for Equal Opportunities and Diversity and be aware of the implications of non-compliance on colleagues and co-workers.
- Any other duties, commensurate with the grade of the post.
Knowledge and qualifications
Essential
- Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework level 9/10/11 (Ordinary/Honours degree, Postgraduate Qualification), or equivalent in a relevant scientific area (e.g. biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, oncology, medicine etc).
- Knowledge of project management techniques and tools and their application in a life science context.
- Knowledge of project management software applications (MS Project or equivalent).
- Knowledge of how to work effectively with University and NHS partners.
Desirable
- Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework level 12 (PhD) in a relevant scientific area.
- Formal project management qualification (eg PRINCE 2).
- A working knowledge of University policies and procedures.
- Working understanding of the operation of translational and/or clinical projects from a regulatory requirements perspective.
- Broad understanding and awareness of the clinical trials process and how pre-clinical science relates to this.

Essential
- An appropriate level of gravitas, technical insight and credibility to represent the CRUK RadNet Centre Glasgow in a Project Manager role and to drive projects to deliver their stated objectives.
- An excellent communicator with the ability to communicate authoritatively at all levels internally and externally.
- Relationship management expertise: builds and maintains relationships at multiple levels within the programme and externally with collaborators leading to long term benefits to the CRUK RadNet Glasgow Centre.
- Proven experience in planning: self organising with ability to manage multiple competing project activities across a multi-year basis
- Outstanding organisational skills and ability to manage multiple projects in parallel each with multiple dependencies.
- Broad people management skills and ability to influence and lead at all levels within the involved internal and external organisations.
- Ability to proactively engage with seniors (at PI level) and partners with an effective, solution-focused and collaborative approach.
- Negotiating skills. Job holder should have a proven track record in negotiating a way forward in a collaborative research environment and securing agreement from the partner level teams.
- High level of competence with a range of computerised systems, databases and data sources to support project management; improve team communications, information and data dissemination.
- Experience in analysing financial data and providing management information with a high degree of accuracy.
- Able to prioritise own work and that of others under conflicting pressures. C12. Ability to work under a minimum of supervision.
- Proven ability to solve problems creatively working in a technically complex area and working across a range of management functions. C14. Excellent written communication skills.
Desirable
- Academic/Industry research skills and background in genetics/molecular biology/clinical operations/oncology.
Experience

- Proven ability to manage multiple collaborative projects.
- Significant project management experience managing multi-disciplinary collaborations with clinical domain experts and academic/NHS/Industry research functions.
- Experience of providing high calibre technical leadership and direction within a complex multi-stakeholder high profile context.
- Experience of managing and controlling budgets.
- Project management experience within a life sciences context.

- Background in pharmaceutical, biotech or CRO industries.
