Research Enhancement Adviser

Job purpose
The Research Enhancement Adviser will be responsible for and contribute to the planning, implementation and management of key research projects and processes. Their remit will focus on strategic projects in support of strengthening and enhancing the University’s research environment, coordination of and processes for the University’s submission to research assessment exercises like REF2029 and driving initiatives to support research enhancement while building networks and relationships with key stakeholders.
The post holder will be a key member of the newly formed Research Enhancement Team in the Research Services Directorate and will work closely with colleagues across the University in both the Colleges and Professional Services, building links between users, systems and data. The Research Enhancement Team supports the University to develop systems and processes resulting in the enhancement of the University’s research environment and operations; this includes the development and delivery of the University’s Research Excellence Framework submission.

Knowledge and qualifications
Essential
- Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9, (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4), or equivalent (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training). Or: ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this post having acquired the necessary professional knowledge and management skills in a similar or number of different roles
- A comprehensive knowledge of the UK Higher Education research environment, including opportunities, challenges, funders and drivers.
- An in-depth understanding of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) and its implications on HE research environment and culture.
Desirable
- Knowledge and understanding of University strategies, policies and procedures.
Skills
Essential
- Demonstrated high level communication skills, both verbal and written, including an ability to convert complex information into effective, concise and purposeful briefs and papers.
- Ability to take initiative and to exercise independent judgement.
- Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and collaboratively in partnership with teams in parallel services/units.
- Highly developed analytical and conceptual skills including demonstrated ability to quickly assimilate new concepts and information and deliver positive, innovative solutions.
- High degree of initiative, responsibility and self-motivation, and a professional and proactive approach to problem solving.
- High level of influencing and negotiating skills.
- Highly organised, with the ability to define priorities and work flexibly and effectively under pressure to meet demanding (and sometimes conflicting) deadlines.
- Strong data skills, able to identify relevant data for audience, collate and analyse.
- Self-confidence, resilience and comfortable working in ambiguity.
- High level proficiency of Microsoft software packages.
Desirable
- Ability to deliver qualitative data analyses, e.g. using software such as NVivo.
Experience
Essential
- Experience of managing workload and the workload of others within the context of competing deadlines and priorities.
- Experience of successfully working effectively across diverse teams.
- A track record of credible engagement working with, negotiating and influencing senior executives.
- Experience of working with data and producing a range of data analysis, including visualisation
- Experience of working with staff across a large and diverse organisation to provide specialist advice, guidance and recommendations.
- Evidence of critical analysis and fact-finding, and an ability to combine high-level strategic thinking with attention to detail.
- Evidence of developing procedures and policies and rolling out such programmes across a wider diverse range of departments.
Desirable
- Experience of working in Higher Education research management.
- Experience of drafting internal and external communications.

- The James McCune Smith Learning Hub is an inspirational and diverse learning space. The flagship building was the first to be completed as part of our campus development, and provides a creative environment, combining flexible study and social learning space with multi-styled and technology-enabled teaching. It can accommodate more than 2,500 students, and includes a lecture theatre with capacity for 500 students. State-of-the-art teaching facilities, with flexible study spaces and interactive teaching for students, help to create a more immersive learning experience.

Salary will be Grade 7, £40,247 - £45,163 per annum.
This post is full time (35 hours p/w) and open ended. Relocation assistance will be provided where appropriate.
