We are responsible for providing 40,000 students with equal access to careers development, employability and opportunities including international mobility in preparation to effectively compete in the global job market.
We take a leading role in supporting Learning & Teaching, Student Experience and International strategies as part of an institutional ecosystem of student education and support.
Our new employability framework is currently in development and we have an opportunity for a Careers and Employability Manager to join our team on a fixed-term basis. This role will make a significant contribution to the embedding of employability within the curriculum and the achievement of Learning & Teaching strategy objectives.
Job Purpose: Careers and Employability Manager
As a member of the Academic Partnerships Team within Careers, Employability & Opportunity, you will be responsible for the embedding and extracting of employability and skills through the curriculum and co-curriculum for one of our four Colleges.
Working in partnership with a range of academic and professional services staff, employers and students, this role will involve facilitating the design and delivery of careers and employability-related programmes to UG and PGT students.
Using our new employability framework, you will provide consultancy, specialised knowledge and expertise to help frame a consistent approach to employability across the University and will therefore make a significant contribution to the ambitions of the University’s Learning and Teaching strategy.

Main duties & responsibilities
- Provide advice and guidance to the University, its colleges and schools on matters of institutional and local strategy, as they relate to careers and employability.
- Develop and lead an innovative and impactful programme of careers and employability that is embedded in curricula, where possible, within designated schools/colleges, working in partnership with academic colleagues including Deans for Learning and Teaching, school-based directors of studies and course convenors.
- Engage directly with students and staff to inform the planning, design and delivery of the careers and employability programme.
- Build strong and productive relationships with relevant employers, working closely with academic and professional services colleagues and the CEO Employer Engagement team, to maximise the benefit of the University’s existing employer links and expand work-related learning opportunity for students.
- Analyse, interpret and use key data to influence and inform the design of careers interventions as an integrated part of student education and aligned with curricula. Plan and manage projects that are intended to address specific student needs within their discipline.
- Work closely with other members of the Academic Partnerships and Student Professional Development teams to improve the career outcomes of students, developing a central repository of materials and good practice to enhance employability and promoting their use in teaching and co-curricular settings.
- As an expert member of the CEO team, proactively monitor the effectiveness, quality and impact of provisions, contributing to continuous improvement and helping to make this a sector-leading service.
- Drawing on professional background and expertise, deliver skills courses and information sessions, facilitate group work and experiential learning.
- Act as a mentor and role model within CEO supporting the development of new members of careers management staff. This may include training and supervision of others involved in the delivery of careers and employability.
- Represent CEO on internal governance groups and networks and participate actively as a member of external local and international networks and working groups, influencing policy and strategy inside the University and also at regional, Scottish and UK national levels.
Knowledge and qualifications
Essential
- Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary professional knowledge and management skills in a similar or number of different specialist roles. Or Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9, 10 or 11 (Ordinary/ Honours Degree, Post Graduate Qualification), or equivalent, including being professionally qualified in relevant discipline, with a broad range of professional experience in a management role(s).
- Authoritative knowledge, understanding and expertise across all aspects of policy and practice relevant to careers and employability and its relevance to students and the curriculum.
Desirable
- Knowledge and expertise in a range of psychometric tools with accreditation to BPS level A/B.

Essential
- Strategic thinker, able to fashion trends, outlooks and opportunities into a systematic approach with a continuous awareness of the bigger picture to ensure shared success across boundaries.
- Proven track record of identifying alternative ways of doing things and influencing academics and/or business managers.
- Effective at building strong working partnerships and developing synergies with multiple stakeholders.
- Ability to demonstrate creativity and innovation in service design and delivery.
- Ability to plan and organise strategically, prioritising appropriately between operational requirements, projects and competing priorities.
- Proven track record of effective team working to shared goals.
- Excellent communication, oral and written, presentation and interpersonal skills to demonstrate credibility with high potential individuals and corporate partners, as well as academic and administrative colleagues.
Experience
Essential
- Significant professional experience in a careers service, recruitment, HR or training, some of which has been gained in a business environment, or recruiter with strong HE links.
- Strong track record of designing and delivering professional careers and employability interventions and associated resources.
- A proven track record of influencing and negotiating curriculum development and design process.
- Demonstrable experience of evaluating service delivery for continuous improvement.
- Extensive experience of working with students and understanding of a wide range of student-related issues and the potential impact on career progression.
Desirable
- Line management or supervisory experience.

This post is full time and fixed term for up to 12 months from start date.
