Introduction

The  College of Arts & Humanities at the University of Glasgow is seeking to appoint two new members of academic staff to complement and extend the expertise and activities of our sector-leading  Beniba Centre for Slavery Studies. Each post will be co-located both in the Beniba Centre and in any one of the College’s other  Schools/subjects and will contribute to teaching and/or research and external partnership in both areas and to developing interdisciplinary collaborations. These new, open-ended investment posts demonstrate our commitment to further strengthening and building long-term capacity in the Beniba Centre and in cognate fields (for example, in scholarship relating to race and ethnicity, black and indigenous studies, reparative justice and decolonial pedagogies).
 
We are looking for candidates who will complement and enhance the work of the Beniba Centre for Slavery Studies and contribute to the success of any of our other Schools/subject areas. We are particularly interested in candidates with research and/or teaching expertise in the following scholarly fields: reparative justice; race; race and ethnicity; racism and anti-racism; Black and indigenous studies; colonisation and decolonisation; Global Majority studies; Black Studies; Caribbean Studies; the Portuguese-speaking African Diaspora, and Museum Studies. In addition, we welcome applications from candidates with an interest in Digital Humanities methodologies.

Post 1: Lecturer for Beniba Centre for Slavery Studies
Learning, Teaching & Scholarship Track (LTS Track)
Salary: Grade 7, £39,347 - £44,263 per annum.
 
The successful candidate will teach and convene courses across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within the College of Arts & Humanities including the Master’s programme in Reparative Justice (delivered jointly with the University of the West Indies); they will supervise PGT and PGR students; work alongside other academic and Professional Service colleagues to enhance the student experience; deliver new courses and programmes; pursue scholarship on pedagogy relevant to their discipline with the opportunity to develop leadership in this area and they will contribute to College and University initiatives to decolonise our curriculum and practices. They will undertake necessary administrative and service duties. They will work with others to initiate and sustain strategic external partnerships locally, nationally and internationally – including with HEI and non-HEI partners.
 
Post 2: Lecturer for Beniba Centre for Slavery Studies
Research & Teaching Track (R&T)
Salary: Grade 8, £48,350 - £56,021 per annum..
 
The successful candidate will undertake research of international excellence in any field relating to the work of the Beniba Centre for Slavery Studies and to any one of the College’s other Schools/subjects (and future REF UoAs.) They will pursue external funding (via UKRI awards, consultancy and other routes) and they will contribute to knowledge exchange and impact activities relevant to their field of enquiry. They will teach and convene courses across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within the College of Arts & Humanities including the Master’s programme in Reparative Justice (delivered jointly with the University of the West Indies); they will supervise PGT and PGR students; work alongside other academic and Professional Service colleagues to enhance the student experience; deliver new courses and programmes and they will contribute to College and University initiatives to decolonise our curriculum and practices. Job purpose

To develop, lead and sustain research and scholarship of international standard and contribute to the delivery of an excellent student experience by delivering, organising and reviewing agreed teaching, assessment and administration processes to enhance learning and teaching in the College of Arts & Humanities.

Post 2: Research and Teaching (R&T) Track (Grade 8)

To develop, lead and sustain research and scholarship of international standard and contribute to the delivery of an excellent student experience by delivering, organising and reviewing agreed teaching, assessment and administration processes to enhance learning and teaching in the College of Arts & Humanities.

Main duties & responsibilities

Post 1: Learning, Teaching and Scholarship (LTS) Track (Grade 7)

  • Deliver a range of teaching, supervision and assessment activities across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within the Subject/School.
  • Carry out course administration within required timescales ensuring effective communication of information, in particular assessment requirements and criteria and timely and constructive feedback on assessment.
  • Contribute to the on-going development and design of the curriculum in a manner that supports a research-led and scholarly approach to student learning and assessment in the discipline and/or profession.
  • Make effective use of learning technologies to support and enhance course delivery,course organisation, feedback and assessment. This may involve blended and/or online provision.
  • Ensure an inclusive and evidence-based approach to facilitating learning in a range of face to face and potentially online delivery formats such as tutorials, lectures, problem based learning, that promotes student participation and learning outcome attainment.
  • Engage in scholarship by undertaking methodologically rigorous, educationally relevant, enquiries into student learning and disseminate evidence to enhance your own, and potentially others', teaching practices. Attend and participate in appropriate seminars and conferences to support research-led teaching, scholarship and/or professional practice in your disciplinary area.
  • Develop effective working relationships with students and, in partnership with relevant student services teams, respond appropriately to the diverse range of learning approaches and learner needs.
  • Develop relationships with external stakeholders in support of knowledge exchange, public understanding and appropriate forms of outreach such as widening access.
  • Participate in local, and potentially overseas, activities associated with student recruitment (e.g. open days), orientation and induction and other School and University initiatives such as support for student transitions, employability and student mobility as appropriate.
  • Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.
  • To contribute to the enhancement of the University's international profile in line with the University's Strategic Plan, World Changers Together

Post 2: Research and Teaching (R&T) Track (Grade 8)

  • Pursue and deliver independent research proposals and/or collaborative research projects, project managing research activities, supervising and taking responsibility for the research team. Securing external resources to support research individually and/or jointly, as appropriate to the subject area.
  • Develop an expert reputation in the field by effective dissemination and publishing of research findings in leading journals and conferences, and where appropriate undertaking knowledge exchange activities.
  • Make a substantial contribution to developing and enhancing the research profile of the School/College. Establishing and leading research collaborations with appropriate individuals and groups within the University, including multi-disciplinary links, and developing external research collaborations both nationally and internationally, to ensure that research activities are at the forefront of the field.
  • Actively contribute to the effective management and administration of the College/School, assuming responsibility for the management of allocated resources and contributing to the wider organisation of the subject area.
  • Carry out course administration within required timescales ensuring effective communication of information, in particular assessment requirements and criteria and timely and constructive feedback on assessment
  • Develop effective approaches which enhance intellectual understanding and innovation in the field and support and enhance course delivery, course organisation, feedback and assessment. This may involve blended and/or online provision.
  • Ensure an inclusive and evidence-based approach to facilitating learning in a range of face to face and potentially online delivery formats such as tutorials, lectures, problem-based learning, that promotes student participation and learning outcome attainment.
  • Develop effective working relationships with students and early career staff in the subject specialism, providing specialist advice, support and academic leadership. Work in partnership with relevant student services teams, respond appropriately to the diverse range of learning approaches and learner needs.
  • To supervise project work at undergraduate and Masters levels and take forward the supervision and training of postgraduate research students.
  • Take on administrative or management roles within the subject/School as assigned by the Head of School.
  • Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.
  • To contribute to the enhancement of the University's international profile in line with the University's Strategic Plan, World Changers Together

Knowledge and qualifications

Post 1: Learning, Teaching and Scholarship (LTS) Track (Grade 7)

Essential

  • A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent in a related discipline and/or teaching experience.
  • A2 Sufficient breadth and/or depth of knowledge in the specialist subject/discipline and of teaching methods and techniques to work within the subject area.
  • A3 Thorough knowledge and ability to apply policy, practice and procedures including broader University/sector/external (e.g. commercial) awareness.
  • A4 Up-to-date knowledge and specialist understanding in the field with an ability to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students to inspire learning and to provide pastoral care to students within the subject area.

Post 2: Research and Teaching (R&T) Track (Grade 8)

Essential

  • A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent in related discipline with a growing reputation for scholarship within the subject area
  • A2 Membership of relevant professional body, where appropriate
  • A3 Extensive breadth and depth of knowledge in the specialist subject/discipline to develop research and teaching programmes/methodologies/learning support

Essential 

  • C1 Ability to communicate material of a specialist or highly technical nature and to be effective both orally and in writing at a level appropriate to the activity.

Post 2: Research and Teaching (R&T) Track (Grade 8)

Essential 

  • C1 Proven ability to design, review and enhance multiple learning, teaching and assessment programmes.
  • C2 Ability to communicate complex or conceptual ideas to those with limited knowledge and understanding and developing early career academic colleagues.
  • C3 Ability to contribute to broader leadership and management activities along with an awareness of current and future priorities of the University/College/School/Service.

Campus development plan

Our Vision 

Over the next 10 years, the major investment will expand our campus footprint by 25%, creating a new urban quarter with the University at the heart of a revitalised west end. This is the largest development since the creation of the original campus in 1870. 

This is a unique opportunity for a University to extend the boundaries of its historic core in a central city location. It will create: 

  • New learning and teaching facilities
  • Refurbishment and repurposing of existing iconic buildings for specialist uses
  • Identification and design of social spaces that support the student and community experience. 

The expansion of our Gilmorehill campus into the 14 acre, former Western Infirmary site will transform the West End of Glasgow. The Masterplan for the site will incorporate: 

  • New learning and teaching facilities supporting our students and making sure they get the best in modern teaching and learning styles and approaches
  • Creation of a Research Hub, housing large-scale multidisciplinary projects and incubator space for spin out collaborations with industry. This will encourage further innovation development
  • New public cycle and pedestrian routes and a new central square which will link Byres Road to the up-and-coming cultural quarter for the West End, with new links to Kelvingrove and the newly-refurbished Kelvin Hall
  • Refurbishment of five listed buildings: The Chapel, the Outpatients building, the Macgregor building, the Tennent Institute and Anderson College
  • Commercial opportunities, including a hotel, restaurant, bars and cafes
  • The state of the art Learning and Teaching Hub adjacent to the Boyd Orr building on University Avenue will be completed next year.
