NOVEMBER 2022

This month, the University of Glasgow hosted the inaugural THE Global Sustainable Development Congress. Over three days, our Gilmorehill Campus welcomed over 200 delegates from across the globe to discuss how universities, governments, industry and the third sector can come together to address some of the most challenging transformations around the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While the Congress highlighted the extent and urgency of the global challenges that we now face, it also emphasised how much we can achieve when we work together and the spirit of collaboration which exists within our sector. My deepest thanks to all of the panellists and delegates who contributed to the powerful conversations that took place in Glasgow.

I am thrilled to announce that the University of Glasgow has just launched a call for proposals to support our collaborative work on the African continent. We would like to engage a valued partner who will put forward a senior academic representative to take on certain activities on our behalf within the region and further our strategic aims across Africa. More information on this exciting new opportunity is included in this month’s newsletter.

Over the last six months, our Connect newsletter has been dedicated to the four pillars of our Global Glasgow 2025 International Strategy: Global Reputation, Global Research, Global Relationships and Global Recruitment. This issue of Connect marks the fourth issue in this series, with a piece by our Director of Recruitment and International Relations, Ian Thomson, focusing on global student recruitment and how we ensure that we continue to remain a top-choice institution in an increasingly competitive landscape. We will conclude the series in a future issue with a feature on global staff recruitment.

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Ian who I am sorry to announce will be taking (early!) retirement in December of this year. While I am sure you will all join me in wishing Ian all the best for his next adventure, he will be terribly missed by colleagues at TeamUofG, and many of you across the sector.

Best wishes,
Rachel Sandison
