Our Advanced Research Centre officially opens
Our flagship research facility, the £118 million Mazumdar-Shaw Advanced Research Centre (ARC), was officially opened this month by Nobel Prize winning Chemist, Professor Sir David MacMillan.
The ARC will be the creative and collaborative heart of cross-disciplinary research at the University of Glasgow.
The centre will provide a unique environment for delivering world changing research. It is designed to promote collaboration and pioneer new ways of working and will act as a catalyst for strengthening relationships with our stakeholders including partners, funders, industry, civic bodies and the public.
Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glasgow, welcomed guests to an event in the atrium of the new building on the 8th June. Nobel Laureate, Professor Sir David MacMillan, addressed attendees before unveiling a plaque to mark the official opening of the building. Sir David said: "I am honoured to open the Mazumdar-Shaw Advanced Research Centre at the University of Glasgow. This truly is a unique and inspiring building, which recognises and reflects the University of Glasgow’s world changing research ambitions."
The building is named after Glasgow graduate John Shaw and his wife Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, who donated $7.5 million for the building’s construction and to fund a Professorial Chair. Speaking about the centre, Kiran and John said: "It is our fervent hope that the Mazumdar-Shaw Advanced Research Centre will provide a unique environment that supports the kind of interdisciplinary, collaborative research that leads to breakthrough and world changing innovations, which will enhance the quality of life through the betterment of human society."
Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli, said: "The Mazumdar-Shaw Advanced Research Centre creates an environment that enables bold and creative research with world-changing potential.
"This would not have been possible without the hard work of all our colleagues who have helped bring the ARC to reality and all the people and organisations who believe in the University of Glasgow’s vision. I would like to thank you all for your support."
ARC international visitor's programme
Launching in early 2023, the ARC will host international researchers who wish to make short-term visits to the University to pursue cross-disciplinary collaborations.
Temporary 'research hotel' space will be made available in the ARC with the aim of engaging visiting colleagues in the breadth of Glasgow’s research activities. A bespoke programme of networking events will be designed for each visiting researcher to stimulate cross-disciplinary ideation.
Suggestions for participants in the ARC International Visitor’s Programme will be sought from the university community. The programme will be open to all disciplines, sectors and career stages. This programme will develop cross-disciplinary partnerships, enable the identification of innovative research ideas, encourage collaborative papers and funding applications, and raise the international research profile of Glasgow.
