Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli leads delegation to India

Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli and colleagues from the University of Glasgow had the opportunity to engage with offer holders, partners and alumni across India during a visit to the country earlier this year.

The group visited Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Mumbai and New Delhi to meet with existing and new academic and industry partners. The delegation also had the opportunity to meet with prospective students across all five cities and connect with inspiring alumni at a networking brunch in New Delhi.

Academic staff from the College of Medicine, Veterinary and Life Sciences, Adam Smith Business School and the School of Social and Environmental Sustainability, with Professor Moyra Boland (Dean for Global Engagement) and colleagues from Recruitment and International Relations, kicked off this important visit in Bangalore.

"India is, and always will be, a valued partner to the University."

The group met with colleagues from the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore to discuss collaborative teaching opportunities within areas such as Life Sciences and spent a productive day with Biocon, one of India’s largest and most successful biopharmaceutical firms.

The University of Glasgow has a long history of working with Biocon to explore areas of collaboration such as joint PhDs. In 2022, the University was honoured to announce that its flagship new building, the Mazumdar-Shaw Advanced Research Centre, was named after Biocon’s founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw and her husband John Shaw. The couple gifted $7.5 billion to the University in 2019.

The group also held successful meetings with colleagues from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune, Atlas SkillTech University and O.P. Jindal Global University.

One of the priorities for this delegation was to meet with our network of recruitment partners and prospective students in each city. Indian students occupy an important place in the University of Glasgow’s global student community, and it was fantastic to allow students to hear more about their future studies from leading academics from across the University.

During this visit, the University was delighted to announce a new multi-million-pound scholarship scheme for Indian postgraduate students. The India Merit Award covers programmes in more than 150 subject areas across science and humanities.

Reflecting on the visit, Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli, Principal and Vice-Chancellor, said "The University of Glasgow has very close ties with India, and we are proud of our Indian alumni and of the important partnerships we have developed over many years. We are honoured that so many Indian students choose to study with us, and this trip reinforced our commitment to welcoming many more in years to come. India is, and always will be, a valued partner to the University."
