Since 1949, the University’s unit for Eastern Europe and Eurasia studies—formerly the Institute of Soviet & East European Studies, now the Central & East European Studies (CEES) group—has edited Europe-Asia Studies, a globally recognised academic journal on the history and contemporary political, social, and economic affairs of post-socialist Europe and Asia.

In 2024, the journal celebrated its 75th anniversary. On 24 October, Professors Luca Anceschi and David Smith led a symposium marking this milestone. Reflecting on the journal’s past, present, and future, Anceschi noted, “It’s a rare chance to pause from our editorial work and consider the journal’s impact on CEES, UofG, and our global academic community."

The event featured prominent scholars, including Juliet Jonson of McGill University, who discussed memory politics in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and Jon Oldfield from the University of Birmingham, who explored the evolution of Language-Based Area Studies.

The symposium celebrated the journal’s legacy by welcoming past editors and underscored Europe-Asia Studies’ ongoing commitment to informing debates around Eastern Europe and Eurasia for the next 25 years.
