Professor Petra Meier is joining Glasgow Changing Futures as Academic Lead for Healthy and Equitable Futures.

A Professor of Public Health, Petra leads an active portfolio of research that co-creates and tests social, economic, and environmental solutions which promote health equity, in close collaboration with policy and community partners.

In March, Petra secured a £7.5 million UKRI investment for the multi-institution Policy Modelling for Health Consortium. This will investigate how economic policies may help tackle health inequalities. She also leads the Systems Science in Public Health & Health Economic Research Consortium (SIPHER), a £5 million UKPRP-funded programme exploring how systems thinking and modelling can help inform policy design. Petra is Programme Lead for the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Science Unit’s Systems Science in Health Programme, and a Co-Principal Investigator of the £10.5 million NERC-funded programme, Glasgow as a Living Lab Accelerating Novel Transformation (GALLANT). GALLANT aims to help Glasgow’s transition towards a climate resilient future while tackling health, social and economic inequalities.

Reflecting on her appointment, Petra said: “I am honoured to lead the University of Glasgow’s response to this challenge. I am passionate about helping the University maximise its positive impact on peoples’ lives here and across the globe and become a prominent actor in the pursuit of a more healthy, equitable and environmentally sustainable future.”

“I am keen that we further advance research and innovation that tackles the societal conditions that create and exacerbate health inequalities; that we provide excellent education that changes the lives of those we teach, so they can become changemakers themselves; that our internal operations promote equality and good health for staff, students and all who deal with our organisation; and that we use our extensive external reach to improve the health and wellbeing of current and of future generations.”

“My goal is to enhance the integration, coherence, visibility, and impact of our diverse activities in this area. I am looking forward to working with staff and students from all corners of the university who share my passion for making Healthy and Equitable Futures a reality.”

Petra will take up her new role on 1 December 2024.
