Outlander author and honorary graduate Diana Gabaldon (DLitt 2022) has opened the first international Outlander conference at the University.

Expert scholars and Outlander fans joined Dr Gabaldon to tackle themes such as Jacobite history, screen production, Scottish tourism, Gaelic and Scots, costume design and witchcraft.

The Outlander literary series tells the tale of a post-Second World War nurse who accidentally time travels to Jacobite Scotland. It became one of the bestselling book series of all time and spawned the hugely popular TV series. Professor of Renaissance Studies Willy Maley, who came up with the idea of an Outlander conference, said: “Outlander has had a transformative impact on Scottish culture, generating global interest in the history, languages and landscapes of Scotland.”
