History of Scottish Polar Bears, The Open University

Images of polar bears are often used today to symbolise the climate crisis – but how and why have artists represented polar bears in the past? ‘The Polar Bears of Perth’ is a 15 minute documentary that uses objects in Scottish collections to explore the relationship between humans and polar bears in the early twentieth century. Including interviews with museum curators and the wildlife photographer Doug Allan, the film uncovers the connections between polar bears and the Scottish whaling trade, and reveals the story behind the first polar bear to live in Edinburgh Zoo. Imagine if there were polar bears in Glasgow! Learn about the history of polar bears in Scotland and work together with researchers from The Open University to design a space in which polar bears could live and thrive here today.
