Artisan is a chamber ensemble based in Edinburgh and was founded in 2009 by cellist Clea Friend and violinist Aisling O’Dea. Artisan have consistently brought new and exciting work to the forefront of Scottish chamber music by supporting and promoting living composers and their work. Since their inception they have commissioned more than ten new works, performing them alongside more well-known chamber music repertoire.
'The Painters in my Garden' was a commission by Artisan in 2019, and 'Three Borders Songs' was written in 2017, as part of a Scottish Chamber Orchestra Creative Learning project in connection with the Borders Heritage Festival. ‘Three Borders songs’ is based on the socio - historical heritage of three historic Borders houses: Bowhill House, Aikwood Tower and Abbotsford House. 'The Painters in my Garden' is inspired by paintings by some of the Glasgow Boys - many of which are hanging in the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh. These musical paintings are interspersed with songs by Robert Burns.
