What is mountaineering literature? And how can it be useful to address questions at the intersection of translation and gender studies, and the environmental humanities? In this talk, I will start by looking at the relationship between high-altitude mountaineering and literature, and then address the connection between mountaineering and gender-and race-based binaries. Considering mountaineering (from its alpine, Romantic cradle to the Himalayas) as a fundamentally masculine activity, I will then look at the role women agents have played in its canonisation and transmission, across Italian, English, and French. A focus on translation, journalism, and editing allows me to search behind the scenes of the mountaineering tradition, uncovering a hidden history of exploration, and women’s role in constructing mountain culture.
