Join Cameron Maclean (SGSAH-funded PhD student) in this online talk, exploring The Lord Stewartby Collection of Scottish Coins. This talk will explore the collection’s background, including the theft of its earliest coins from the home of Lord and Lady Stewartby in June 2007, and the ongoing Crimestoppers appeal to recover them. We will also examine many of the collection’s highlights, spanning from the foundation of Scotland’s coinage in the 12th century until its end in 1707.

The Lord Stewartby Collection is the largest collection of Scottish coins ever assembled by a private individual. Consisting of over 6,000 coins, it was formed over seven decades by Ian Halley Stewart, Baron Stewartby (1935-2018).
The Lord Stewartby Collection of Scottish Coins was entrusted to The Hunterian in 2017, where it is used as a study and teaching resource.
This talk will explore the collection’s background, including the theft of its earliest coins from the home of Lord and Lady Stewartby in June 2007, and the ongoing Crimestoppers appeal to recover them.
We will also examine many of the collection’s highlights, spanning from the foundation of Scotland’s coinage in the 12th century until its end in 1707.
About the Speaker
Cameron Maclean is a SGSAH-funded PhD student at the University of Glasgow. His research focuses on the coinage of Scotland and England during the 17th century. He has been voluntarily cataloguing The Hunterian’s coin collection since 2019.
Friday Focus is an online talks series hosted by The Hunterian, University of Glasgow. Each session features a different speaker, sharing a deeper insight into our exhibitions and collections, research and work going on behind the scenes at The Hunterian.
