Over the last four years, The Hunterian has significantly expanded its collection of early Scottish landscapes, supported by grants from the Art Fund, the National Fund for Acquisitions, and the Alexander and Margaret Johnstone Endowment Fund.
In the mid-18th and early 19th century, as Scotland moved beyond religious and civil wars, native artists adopted a fresh perspective on its landscapes, born out of a wider cultural drive to celebrate and ‘re discover’ Scotland. Alongside writers like Sir Walter Scott and Robert Burns, painters such as John Knox helped shape Scotland’s modern national identity. His views of Glasgow in particular, played a crucial role in redefining how the city was perceived both at home and abroad.
This talk will explore the latest addition to The Hunterian collection, a view of Glasgow Green by John Knox.
The Friday Focus talk programme features a different speaker each week, sharing a deeper insight into our exhibitions and collections, and work going on behind the scenes at The Hunterian. We hold the talks every Friday at 1pm online over Zoom. Talks are approximately 20 minutes long with time for questions afterwards.
