With more than 40,000 items, our collection of works on paper is one of the strengths of The Hunterian art collection and one of the largest in Scotland. As these works are sensitive to light, their exposure must be carefully controlled and limited, making it a challenge to have them on public display.
As part of our ‘Reframing the Hunterian Art Gallery’ project, we set up a system to allow us to increase the number of works on paper on display in the Hunterian Art Gallery. This system, which we called ‘rotations’, established that specific artworks would change every 3–4 months and would be replaced with new works from the collection. Thanks to the joint effort of our team, we have been able to show some 100 different works on paper in our main gallery since the redisplay opened in April 2023.
In this Friday Focus talk, Hunterian Curator Lola Sanchez-Jauregui Alpanes will provide an overview of last year’s rotations; and introduce the current display and works included.
The Friday Focus talk programme features a different speaker each week, sharing a deeper insight into our exhibitions and collections, and work going on behind the scenes at The Hunterian. We hold the talks every Friday at 1pm online over Zoom. Talks are approximately 20 minutes long with time for questions afterwards.
