The Hunterian, University of Glasgow and Tramway announce live performance of Derek Jarman’s 'Blue', shown for the first time in Scotland. 'Blue' (1993) was British artist and filmmaker Derek Jarman’s final film, released shortly before his death in 1994 from AIDS-related complications. Featuring an unchanging screen of celestial blue accompanied by a soundtrack of music and voiceovers, we hear Jarman reflecting on his own AIDS-related illnesses, on his mortality, and on loved ones lost to the virus.
Thirty years after the film was released, director Neil Bartlett presents 'Blue Now' – a live performance of the film and testament to its enduring legacy. Reimagined for the stage, Blue Now brings together an incredible live cast and new music. Composer Simon Fisher Turner, who created the original soundtrack, performs the new live score created in collaboration with cellist and composer Lucy Railton. Blue Now’s cast includes actor Russel Tovey, poets Joelle Taylor and Jay Bernard and writer and performer Travis Alabanza who together deliver Jarman’s powerful words. 'Blue Now' is unique opportunity to reflect on the impact of the AIDS epidemic, and the importance of creating space for compassion, rage and poetry in the face of prejudice and oppression.
This production is part of The Hunterian’s event programme for upcoming Derek Jarman exhibition, 'Digging in Another Time: Derek Jarman’s Modern Nature,' open at the Hunterian Art Gallery from 2 November 2024.
