Friday Focus - Friday Focus - Collecting World Art at the Andersonian Museum (1830-1889)
Little has been written about the Andersonian Museum at Anderson’s University (which became today’s University of Strathclyde), and even less research has addressed the museum’s “ethnological collection” – as the Andersonian’s curators defined it. This collection was transferred to The Hunterian when the Andersonian closed in 1889, and it remains at the University of Glasgow today. In this Friday Focus talk, join Hunterian Curator Andy Mills to discuss the Andersonian as a Victorian ethnological museum; some of the agents, processes and networks of its accumulation; and ask what made it different to The Hunterian at the time.

Throughout much of the 19th century, The Hunterian was one of two university museums in Glasgow, both of which exhibited collections of world art as vehicles for culturally describing the wider world that Glaswegians were increasingly encountering.

The Friday Focus talk programme features a different speaker each week, sharing a deeper insight into our exhibitions and collections, and work going on behind the scenes at The Hunterian. We hold the talks every Friday at 1pm online over Zoom. Talks are approximately 20 minutes long with time for questions afterwards.
