From helping lay the first telegraph cable across the Atlantic to absolute zero and the Kelvin scale for measuring temperature. Lord Kelvin, University of Glasgow Graduate and later Professor, was a genius whose invaluable contribution to knowledge significantly affects our modern world, from thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism to hydrodynamics and geophysics, among other areas.
Even Kelvin's failures, such as calculating the age of the earth, which were based on a false premise and proved wildly inaccurate, show the breadth of his scholarly engagement and creative approach to ideas.
In this 200th anniversary year of his birth, the Kelvin Games Jam asks participating teams to create a game or gaming concept which features risk taking, innovative ideas, creativity, and challenging scientific conventions.
The game/concept must also display empathy, diversity and be fun to play.
We want participants to reflect on and 'build' in response to one of the following areas of Kelvin’s life and research:
Communication – explore and respond to current communication challenges
Balancing Energy Resources
Chirality – explore the risk of getting a mirror-image of what you expected
Trial and Error – reference ideas and concepts that Kelvin got wrong – and maybe creatively fix them
Open to University of Glasgow students from any discipline or stage.
The entries will be judged by a panel of experts from the University of Glasgow Games and Gaming Lab, the School of Physics and Astronomy and employers (TBC).
There is a prize of £500 for the winning team.
