Jyotsna Srikanth, MBE, is a sought-after British-Indian violinist and composer known for her versatility and ability to collaborate with different genres at ease. Hailing from a family of musicians, she learnt vocal music from her mother, Rathna Srikantiah, aged 5, and Carnatic violin from the legendary seven-stringed violinist Sri R R Keshavamurthy. Although intensely rooted in Carnatic music, she was also educated in western classical music from a young age, studying violin under V S Narasimhan, and performing her first concert at the age of nine. Over the years, she has flourished as both a performer and composer, exploring the rich crossover between Indian music and a variety of contemporary flavours. Her violin playing is renowned for its blend of ‘bhava’ (musical expression and emotion) and fingering technique and she has since become a popular choice for many music collaborators seeking artists of high versatility across Indian jazz, experimental music and cross-over genres. Her album Call of Bangalore (Riverboat Records) cemented her position as a ‘major instrumentalist of vision and imagination’ (fRoots) and ‘an extraordinary and versatile violinist’ (The Guardian).
This concert is part of the Thursday Lunchtime concert series, and is free to attend.
Doors open at 12.45pm, and seats are allocated on a first come first served basis. Please arrive early to avoid disappointment.
